PS5 External Hard Drive
One of the smartest upgrades you can make to your gaming setup — giving you the extra space you need to store more games, cut back on constant deletions, and keep your library ready to play.
Whether you're a casual gamer or a serious collector, running out of internal storage on your PS5 is a frustration you don't have to live with. KingSpec's range of external storage solutions is built for performance, reliability, and compatibility with PlayStation 5.

Important: PS5 games cannot be played directly from an external hard drive. Sony's architecture requires PS5-native titles to run from the internal SSD or an approved M.2 NVMe expansion slot. External drives are ideal for storing and playing PS4 titles, and for archiving PS5 games that you transfer back to internal storage when you want to play them.
How to Use an External Drive with Your PS5
Connect via USB
Plug your KingSpec external hard drive into a free USB-A or USB-C port on your PS5. The console will recognise it immediately — no firmware update or complex setup needed.
Format as Extended Storage
Go to Settings → Storage → Extended Storage and select your drive. Follow the on-screen prompts to format it. This takes less than a minute and the drive will be ready to use.
Install PS4 Games or Archive PS5 Titles
Move your PS4 game library onto the external drive to play directly, or use it as an archive for PS5 games you're not currently playing. When you want to play an archived PS5 title, transfer it back to internal storage in minutes.
Manage Your Library Anytime
From the Games and Apps menu, you can move titles between internal and external storage, check remaining space, and organise your library without deleting anything.
💡 Pro Tips for PS5 External Storage
- Keep PS5 games on internal SSD — you'll always get the fastest load times from the internal drive
- Use the 2TB or 4TB model if you have a large PS4 library — the 1TB fills up faster than you'd expect
- Label your drive so you can identify it quickly if you use it across multiple consoles
- Transfer before you need to play — copy your next game to internal storage while you're finishing the current one
- Always safely eject via the PS5 storage menu before unplugging to avoid data corruption
- Keep firmware updated — Sony occasionally updates external storage compatibility and performance
