How the SSD Compatibility Checker Works

  • For M.2, confirm SATA or NVMe and the supported length.

How to Know Which SSD Your Computer Supports

Start with the storage section of the manufacturer specification or service manual. A drive can fit physically but still use the wrong protocol.

SSD Form Factor

A 2.5-inch SATA SSD installs in a drive bay and uses SATA data and power connections. M.2 drives mount directly to a supported M.2 slot. mSATA is a separate, older card format and is not interchangeable with M.2.

SATA vs NVMe

SATA and NVMe use different storage protocols. NVMe communicates over PCIe, while SATA uses the SATA interface. Check the slot protocol rather than relying on the drive's shape.

M.2 SSD Sizes

M.2 numbers describe width and length in millimeters. A 2230 is 22 by 30 mm, 2242 is 22 by 42 mm, 2260 is 22 by 60 mm, and 2280 is 22 by 80 mm.

PCIe Generation

NVMe SSDs may use PCIe 3.0, 4.0, or 5.0. PCIe devices and slots normally negotiate a mutually supported generation, but the device manual and firmware still determine practical support.

M.2 SATA vs M.2 NVMe Compatibility

M.2 describes the card format, not the storage protocol. An M.2 SATA drive and an M.2 NVMe drive can look similar while using different electrical connections and protocols.

A SATA-only M.2 slot cannot use an NVMe-only drive. An NVMe-only slot cannot use an M.2 SATA drive unless the device explicitly supports both protocols.

Does PCIe Generation Affect SSD Compatibility?

PCIe generations are designed for backward compatibility. A PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD may operate in a PCIe 3.0 slot at the slower shared generation, while a PCIe 3.0 SSD may operate in a newer slot at Gen 3 speed.
