Your mini PC shipped with a small factory drive or a slow eMMC module. Your compact laptop's secondary M.2 slot is sitting empty. Your industrial system needs reliable compact storage that runs continuously without a fan. KingSpec's NT Series M.2 SATA NGFF SSDs are built for exactly these situations. SATA III, up to 580 MB/s, in 42mm and 80mm lengths, from 128GB to 2TB.

Before ordering: confirm your slot says "M.2 SATA," "NGFF SATA," or "B+M key." If it says "NVMe" or "PCIe," you need a different drive. If it says "mSATA" or "mini-PCIe," you also need a different drive.

What You Need to Know Before Buying

The phrase "mSATA SSD" is used loosely in the market to describe compact SATA drives in general. Technically, true mSATA drives use a mini-PCIe connector (from the 2009 specification). The drives in this collection use the M.2 (NGFF) connector, which is the modern successor to mSATA. Both carry SATA III data at 6 Gbps and deliver the same speed ceiling of about 550 to 580 MB/s. The connectors are physically different and not interchangeable.

KingSpec's NT Series M.2 SATA NGFF drives are the right choice for any device whose specification sheet uses the terms "M.2 SATA," "NGFF SATA," or "M.2 B+M key." They are not compatible with mSATA mini-PCIe slots, NVMe M.2 slots, or standard 2.5-inch SATA bays.

Why this matters: the most common return issue for M.2 SATA drives is buying one for a slot that only supports NVMe. An NVMe-only slot will not detect these drives, and a SATA-only slot will not detect NVMe drives. A few seconds checking your device's spec page prevents this entirely.

The Right Devices for These Drives

Mini PCs. 2242 Form Factor

GMKtec, Bmax, ACEMAGIC, Intel NUC

A large portion of compact mini PCs built on Intel N-series and Celeron processors use M.2 2242 SATA as their primary or only storage slot. The GMKtec NucBox G2 (Intel N100) is confirmed compatible and supports the NT Series 2242 up to 2TB. Many GMKtec Celeron J-series models and similar mini PCs from competing brands use the same slot. Intel NUC 7 and NUC 8 systems often carry an M.2 2242 SATA secondary slot alongside the primary NVMe slot.

Budget Laptops. 2242 Form Factor

Jumper, Prestigio, Chuwi, Teclast

Budget-tier laptops from Jumper (EZbook 3 Pro series) and Prestigio (SmartBook 133 series) use M.2 2242 SATA slots for expandable storage. Many of these ship with small eMMC modules as the primary drive and include an empty M.2 SATA slot for user expansion. The NT Series 2242 turns that empty slot into meaningful storage without spending much.

Mainstream Laptops (Secondary). 2280

Lenovo, Acer, ASUS Secondary SATA Slots

Some mainstream laptops (notably certain Lenovo Yoga and IdeaPad models, Acer Aspire, and ASUS VivoBook configurations) carry two M.2 slots: one NVMe for the primary OS drive and one SATA-only for secondary storage. The NT Series 2280 fills that secondary SATA slot with additional capacity at SATA III speeds without interfering with the NVMe primary drive.

Industrial and Always-On Systems

POS Terminals, Thin Clients, Embedded Boards

Thin clients, point-of-sale systems, digital signage hardware, and industrial computing boards frequently use M.2 SATA in 2242 or 2280 form factors for their low power draw and proven reliability. The NT Series runs from 0°C to 70°C, has no moving parts, and handles continuous operation without performance degradation. 3D NAND construction delivers a TBW rating that supports years of daily writes.

Choosing Between the Two NT Series Models

Both drives use SATA III and deliver the same real-world speed. The only decision is physical length: which one fits your device's M.2 slot.

NT Series M.2 2242 SATA NGFF SSD. from $41.99

42mm: For Mini PCs and Compact Laptops

  • 42mm length, 22mm wide, B+M key M.2 connector
  • SATA III 6 Gbps, up to 580 MB/s sequential read
  • Capacities: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB
  • Compatible with GMKtec NucBox G2, Jumper 3 Pro, Prestigio 133, and similar M.2 2242 SATA devices
  • 3-year warranty, 3D NAND, low power consumption
NT Series M.2 2280 SATA NGFF SSD. from $39.99

80mm: For Standard Laptop and Motherboard Slots

  • 80mm length, 22mm wide, B+M key M.2 connector
  • SATA III 6 Gbps, up to 580 MB/s sequential read
  • Capacities: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB
  • Compatible with Acer, ASUS, MSI, Lenovo models with M.2 2280 SATA-only slots
  • 3-year warranty, 3D NAND, designed for both primary and secondary drive use

Not sure which length fits your device? Check your device's product page or service manual. Look for the M.2 slot specification. It will list the supported length (2242 or 2280) and the interface type (SATA or NVMe). If it lists both lengths, either drive fits. the 2280 is slightly cheaper per gigabyte at larger capacities.

What Adding an M.2 SATA SSD Actually Does for Your System

If your mini PC or laptop shipped with a slow eMMC module (common in budget devices), adding an M.2 SATA SSD produces one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make. eMMC storage in budget mini PCs typically delivers 150 to 300 MB/s read speeds with high latency. A SATA SSD at 550+ MB/s with far lower latency changes how the whole system feels to use. Boot times, app launches, and file operations all become meaningfully faster.

If you are replacing an existing M.2 SATA drive with a larger one from this collection, the speed stays the same but the extra capacity removes the constant pressure of managing what stays installed. Going from a cramped 128GB factory drive to a 1TB NT Series changes a device from frustrating to functional.

At around $40 for 1TB, the NT Series is one of the lowest-cost storage upgrades available for these compact systems. The 3-year warranty and 3D NAND construction make it appropriate for devices running continuously, not just occasional use.

Installation Takes About 10 Minutes

M.2 drives install without cables. The process is the same for both the 2242 and 2280 models.

  • Shut down the device completely and disconnect power.
  • Open the back panel (mini PCs typically use 4 to 6 screws; laptops may require more depending on the design).
  • Hold the drive by its edges. Align the notch on the B+M key connector with the slot key, and slide in at a 30-degree angle until fully seated.
  • Press flat and secure with the M.2 retaining screw. Do not overtighten.
  • Reassemble and power on. The drive appears in Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS) as unformatted. Initialize as GPT and format as NTFS for Windows, or APFS for Mac.
  • For a fresh OS installation: boot from a USB installer. The drive is detected automatically during setup.
  • If the drive does not appear: check your BIOS storage settings and confirm the M.2 slot mode is set to SATA (not NVMe or PCIe). Full troubleshooting at SSD Not Showing Up? Here's How to Fix It.

Frequently Asked Questions: mSATA SSD / M.2 SATA NGFF

What is the difference between mSATA and M.2 SATA NGFF?

Both use the SATA III data protocol and reach similar speeds (around 550 to 580 MB/s) but different physical connectors. mSATA uses a mini-PCIe connector from the 2009 specification, found on laptops from roughly 2011 to 2015. M.2 SATA NGFF uses the modern M.2 edge connector (B+M key), found on mini PCs and compact devices from around 2014 onward. The two are not interchangeable. The KingSpec NT Series uses the M.2 NGFF connector, not the mSATA mini-PCIe connector.

How do I know if my device has an M.2 SATA slot or an M.2 NVMe slot?

Look up your device's product page or service manual and find the storage specification. If it says "M.2 SATA," "NGFF SATA," "M.2 B+M key," or "SATA III 6 Gbps," it is compatible with this collection. If it says "M.2 NVMe," "M.2 PCIe," or "M Key only," it requires an NVMe drive instead. Installing a SATA drive in an NVMe-only slot does no damage. The drive simply will not be detected.

Which model fits a GMKtec NucBox G2?

The NT Series M.2 2242 SATA NGFF SSD (from $41.99). The GMKtec NucBox G2 uses an M.2 2242 SATA slot and supports up to 2TB. This drive is confirmed compatible by verified customer reviews on the product page. The 2280 model is too long and will not fit the G2's slot without modification.

Can I use this drive to upgrade a Jumper EZbook or Prestigio SmartBook?

Yes, if the specific model has an M.2 2242 SATA expansion slot. Both the Jumper EZbook 3 Pro series and Prestigio SmartBook 133 series include an M.2 2242 SATA slot for storage expansion. The NT Series 2242 is compatible. Check your model's specification page or open the device to confirm the slot is present and the length matches before ordering.

Is this faster than the eMMC storage in my mini PC?

Yes, meaningfully. Budget mini PCs use eMMC storage that typically delivers 150 to 300 MB/s with higher latency. The NT Series M.2 SATA drives deliver up to 580 MB/s sequential reads with lower latency, which translates to faster boot times, faster app launches, and a more responsive system overall. The difference is most noticeable at startup and when opening large applications.

Will this work as a primary boot drive?

Yes, in devices where the M.2 SATA slot is the primary or only storage slot. In mini PCs like the GMKtec NucBox G2 where the M.2 SATA slot is the main storage, you can install Windows or Linux directly onto the NT Series drive. Boot from a USB installation drive, and the installer will detect and format the NT Series SSD. In laptops with both a primary NVMe slot and a secondary SATA slot, the NT Series is used as secondary data storage alongside the NVMe boot drive.
